'Coach' Actor Jerry Van Dyke Dies

Jerry Van Dyke, the comedian brother of actor Dick Van Dyke, reportedly has died at the age of 86.

Van Dyke's wife, Shirley, told the site he passed away Friday, two years after a debilitating vehicle accident injured them both.

Refresh for updates Craig T. Nelson and Patricia Heaton are among the costars, friends and collaborators remembering Jerry Van Dyke today. His wife Shirley said that his health had gone downhill since a vehicle accident two years ago.


Van Dyke appeared on The Dick Van Dyke show, one of his earliest appearances as Stacey Petrie in 1962.

He was the younger brother of Dick Van Dyke, and was also a comedian who pursued stand-up while still a young man, performing often at the world's military bases. This role earned Van Dyke four Emmy nominations.

The entertainer's last role was as on the ABC sitcom The Middle where he played grandfather Tag Spence. His onscreen daughter Patricia Heaton marked Van Dyke's passing with a pair of heartfelt tweets.
