Deaths from cancer continue to decline in US

The decline has resulted in 2.3 million fewer cancer deaths from a peak of 215.1 per 100,000 people in 1991 to 158.6 per 100,000 in 2015, according to Cancer Facts and Figures 2018, published Thursday in the journal CA.

About 15 percent of Americans still smoke, but 10 percent fewer people indulge the habit than did a decade ago, a trend that is thought to drive declines in many illnesses, particularly lung cancer and diseases. The cancer death rate decreased by about 1.5% annually for men and women from 2006 to 2015. Cancer mortality was lower for blacks than whites in MA among all ages and in NY among those 65 and older, but higher in the District of Columbia, Wisconsin, Kansas, Louisiana, Illinois, and California.

Otis Brawley, boss restorative officer of the American Cancer Society, said in an announcement that the report underscores the significance of proceeded with endeavors to demoralize tobacco utilize.

With the variation in cancer death rate, the lifetime probability is still higher in men than women.

Researchers agree, however, that the reasons behind racial disparities in cancer deaths are multi-pronged and still not fully understood. Cancer death rates were not statistically different by race in Kentucky and West Virginia, for example, but were the highest of all states for whites. "This is encouraging because it means messages about screening and early detection have been heard", said Linda Goler Blount, president and CEO of the Black Women's Health Imperative.

Hansen added that among individuals undergoing cancer treatment, two-thirds of those working for large companies with over 1,000 staffers reported paid medical leave access, compared to just over one-third of those employed by small firms with fewer than 100 workers. The NCI is undertaking its largest-ever study on the topic to delve into how genetic and biological factors contribute to risk.

Breast cancer deaths dropped by 39 percent from 1990 to 2015 among women, thanks largely to improved detection. Breast cancer alone represents 30 percent of all new cancer diagnoses in women.

The report forecasts about 1.7 million new cancer cases and 609,640 cancer deaths in the United States in 2018. As tobacco use is the major cause of death almost 3 in 10 for the people diagnosed with cancer.

"If we, the cancer community, could do a better job of implementing those things we already know work", Bennett said, "many, many lives could be saved".
