Obama beats Trump again as most admired American man in poll

Foreign policy wins of 2017

Barack Obama edged his successor as the most admired man for 2017, a Gallup poll finds, marking the first time since 2008 when a sitting president didn't win the annual accolade.

But with this 2017 nomination post-presidency, Obama edges out current President Donald Trump, who came in second place followed by Pope Francis.

This year marks the 16th consecutive year that Clinton has taken the top spot as the most admired woman.

Read their full exchange. Obama's 17-percent showing is lower than last year's 22-percent mark but more consistent with the support he received in several previous polls. The incumbent has won 58 of 71 times.

Obama is only the second former president to win the "most admired" title, along with Dwight Eisenhower in 1967 and 1968. The incumbent president is usually the victor, "since he is arguably the most prominent figure in the country", Gallop stated in its news release.

Concluding the national security strategy address that he delivered earlier this month, President Trump described his foreign policy aim "to celebrate American greatness as a shining example to the world". John McCain and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, all carrying 2 percent, and Bernie Sanders, Bill Gates, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and The Dalai Lama, all carrying 1 percent of the polling.

The poll was conducted from 4-11 December among 1,049 American adults from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and has a margin of sampling error of ±4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.

Nine percent of respondents said they most admired Clinton, compared to 7 percent who named Michelle Obama - down from 12 percent who named Clinton in 2016 and her lowest percentage since 2002. "However, retaining that stature may be more challenging in coming years with her political career likely over".

Clinton has topped the survey 22 times in total and 16 times running: more than any other woman in United States history and nine wins ahead of Eleanor Roosevelt. That means she has won the title more than any other woman, with Eleanor Roosevelt coming in second with 13 wins.
