China has unveiled the world's largest amphibious aircraft, which is nearly certain to play a key role in the disputed South China Sea.

China is engaged in the military build-up and the successful flight by the aircraft will add to Beijing's might as it grows assertive in its territorial claims in the South China Sea.The aircraft AG600, code-named "Kunlong", successfully soared into the sky from the Jinwan Civil Aviation Airport. However, it made only one brief flight in 1947.

24 de diciembre de 2017, 08:47Beijing, Dec 24 (Prensa Latina) Chinese authorities performed today the inaugural flight of the first amphibious aircraft made in the country from the southern province of Guangdong; it will cover maritime rescue, fire fighting and ocean monitoring.

The AG600 will be easily capable of reaching all of China's island-building projects in the South China Sea. China is eyeing an entry into aircraft industry with c919.

The plane has been eight years in development, has a maximum take-off weight of 53.5 tonnes and a wingspan of 38.8m (127ft).

The reports also say that the AG600 can be used for marine environment surveys.

The company said the aircraft will be of great importance to the country's emergency rescue system and the building of a strong sea power, noting that tens of thousands of researchers and engineers from almost 200 domestic institutes, universities and enterprises took part in the project. Designed for firefighting and rescue operations, AG600 has a range of 12 hours. Zhang said the model primarily targets domestic buyers, but also will tap the global market.
