In North Korea's case, Kim Jong Un may very well be thinking of using cryptocurrencies, which are not regulated or controlled by any single entity.

"In furtherance of both, and after careful investigation, the US today publicly attributes the massive "WannaCry" cyberattack to North Korea", he wrote.

"The Pentagon is trying to find options that would allow them to punch the North Koreans in the nose, get their attention and show that we're serious", a former USA security official told The Telegraph.

North Korea tested a nuclear weapon in September, its sixth and most powerful nuclear bomb test.

Experts believe that North Korea has more than one ICBM launcher and possibly around 15 nuclear weapons.

Earlier this year, hundreds of thousands of computers around the world came under the grip of the WannaCry as the malware disabled workstations in homes as well as key facilities like hospitals and banks. Microsoft patched existing attacks and "spared many USA targets" while Facebook shut down accounts tied to ongoing cyberattacks, said Tom Bossert, homeland security advisor. Lately, North Korea has varied its launch sites, likely to make it harder for the USA to track and possibly intercept them ahead of time. Short of blowing up a launch site, where launch officers may die and Kim Jong Un himself usually watches nearby, the United States could attempt to intercept North Korea's next missile launch. U.S. policy on North Korea explicitly calls for denying it the means to ideal its missile program.

However, an attack on missile launch sites, while dramatic, wouldn't actually have much effect on Pyongyang's lethal capabilities, some note.

In reality, analysts agree that North Korea would see any attack as the start of a full-scale war of regime change, and standing military orders are to retaliate against U.S. targets with everything they have, assuming everything not used will be destroyed in the U.S. strikes at any rate.
