Pence further delays trip to Middle East

Vice President Mike Pence

"The largest tax cut in American history is a landmark accomplishment for President Trump and a relief to millions of hardworking Americans", said the vice president's spokeswoman, Alyssa Farah, in a statement.

With the Senate vote now expected late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, White House officials said Monday that Pence's trip could not be shortened or delayed any further, so they chose to postpone.

Israel considers Jerusalem its eternal capital, while Palestinians want the capital of an independent state of theirs to be in the city's eastern sector, which Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed in a move never recognised internationally.

The officials said a later departure could have left the Vice President meeting late at night on Wednesday with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and with only a few events possible in Israel before Shabbat on Saturday.

"It has come to our attention that vice president Pence intends to make an official visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and asked me to receive him officially", Adeeb Jowdeh Al Husseini wrote in a letter, according to Israel's Channel 2. "The Vice President is committed to seeing the tax cut through to the finish line".

But uncertainty over the upcoming tax vote prompted Pence to delay the trip until mid January.

That decision led to uproar and protest in the region.

The fallout continued Monday as the United States vetoed a draft UN resolution rejecting Trump's Jerusalem move, after all 14 other Security Council members - including allies like Britain - voted for the measure.

A senior official said that high-profile protests of Trump's decision were not a factor in delaying the trip.

Breaking with decades of USA policy, Trump also said on December 6 that he would move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. McCain has since flown home to Arizona to spend holidays with family, and is expected to miss the tax vote.

Pence, an evangelical Christian who planned to highlight the plight of Christian minorities during his trip, was not scheduled to meet with Palestinian Christians or with officials from the Coptic Christian church, who declined a meeting in response to the USA move.
