Several flights in and out of NI cancelled

Snow falls briefly in London with many other parts of the country hit by the cold weather

The disruption at the UK's busiest airport was blamed on planes having to be de-iced before take-off and after they land, with a backlog caused by aircraft stands being full.

A number of flights from the United Kingdom to Ireland have been cancelled because of snow.

The Twitter account of British Airways, believed to be the worst affected airline, received a deluge of messages from customers unhappy about long waits but also no response on their customer service phone line.

British Airways will be hoping for weather like this at Heathrow, as opposed to the freezing conditions experienced over the last few days.

Although Heathrow remained open throughout the day, around 150 inbound and outbound flights were cancelled - partly because of a reduction in the arrivals rate stipulated by air-traffic controllers, and partly due to delays in de-icing.

Heathrow is advising passengers that "disruption continues today following yesterday's weather" and that passenger's must check the status of their flight before departing for the airport.

A number of flights at Belfast City Airport are also cancelled.

Meanwhile on the continent almost 300 KLM flights were canceled at Amsterdam's Schipol airport, according to the BBC, which noted that 50 flights were canceled at Brussels airport.

Mr Robertson told the 's: "We have no issues - all of the cancellations are down to issues elsewhere". Our operations team is working closely with the airport's on-site MET office, to monitor weather forecasts and minimise disruption to passenger journeys'.

A Heathrow spokesperson said: 'Weather across the United Kingdom and Europe is resulting in some passengers experiencing disruption to their journeys.

Flights to Aberdeen have also faced significant delays as a result of the weather.

At least 50,000 passengers were forced to wait for the recovery of global air traffic departures as well as inbound flights, Sputnik reported, citing The Independent.
