France orders global recall of Lactalis baby formula

Damien Meyer—AFP

PARIS – The French government announced on Sunday it had ordered the recall of a wider range of baby formula products manufactured by the Lactalis Dairy group after new salmonella cases were detected in babies.

Markets in Greece, Morocco, Sudan, Peru, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China are affected. France's health agencies deemed the issue out of control.

Standard Foods, which has pulled Lactalis' imported formula as a preventive measure, said its baby formula under the name of Quaker ProCare has passed safety inspections, while Multipower said its imports from the French firm are safe. It urged parents already in possession of them to stop using them.

Lactalis spokesman spoke of a "probable cause of contamination on one of our drying towers (from the Craon plant) in the period from 1 to 6 May".

All products made there since February 15 have been recalled, Nalet said, adding that the company was taking fresh precautionary measures of disinfecting all of its machinery at the factory.

However, five new cases of salmonellosis were reported in infants this week, one of which had consumed a rice milk that was not among the recalled products on 2 December.

"We've chose to take this measure because salmonella contamination was detected at a production location in France where one of the ingredients is made", said Kruidvat, based in the central Dutch town of Renswoude. According to the country's public health authorities, all 26 babies infected with salmonella have recovered. They are potentially more risky for young children, the elderly or those with weakened immune systems. Seniors, pregnant women, and HIV patients could die from the contamination. For instance, thousands of Chinese babies fell ill after consuming locally-produced, melamine-contaminated baby formulas in 2008.

Six babies died and around 300,000 others were made ill.
