Shooter down, 2 people shot at New Mexico high school

Sheriff: Deputies called to shooting at high school in Aztec

San Juan County Sheriff Ken Christesen told Fox News that the dead are "believed" to be students.

The families of the victims have been notified and none of the dead have yet been identified, the Farmington Daily Times reported.

The deadly shooting Thursday at a public school in the Four Corners is deeply troubling, said the Los Alamos Public Schools board and the superintendent.

The New Mexico State Police were taking over the investigation. The shooting also prompted precautionary lock downs of other area schools.

Police are still in the early process of their investigation into exactly what happened.

Nervous parents initially gathered outside City Hall to wait for more information as officers tried to reassure them.

Aztec High School is located at 500 E Chaco Street, in Aztec, New Mexico. Its main street is lined by old brick buildings that date back more than a century.

In the small community of Aztec, anxious parents rushed to city hall to meet their children. The call came into the Aztec Police Department while classes were in session. There have been a few social media users that have stated that two students were killed.

"While details are still coming in, we grieve for the innocent victims in this senseless act of violence". Ben Ray Lujan said on Twitter.
