IIHS Releases 2018 Top Vehicle Safety Picks

These 15 vehicles are IIHS' top safety picks for 2018

Of the hundreds of auto models on the road today, only 15 have earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating for 2018 due to tougher safety requirements when it comes to passenger side front collisions.

The safety advocacy group, which performs a variety of crash tests on vehicles, added two new tests in the past year: one for improved headlights, which was included in the 2017 "Top Pick Plus" ranking, but not in the "Top Pick" results, and the new passenger-side small overlap front crash. The institute said it devised a passenger-side small overlap front crash test because some manufacturers weren't paying enough attention to the issue.

They've also bumped up standards for headlights.

Another 47 vehicles earned the next-tier Top Safety Pick award with Toyota producing the most vehicles on that list, followed by Hyundai with nine. The latest awards are the first to factor in a passenger-side crash test.

"Drivers expect that their passengers, who are often family, will be protected just as well as they are", IIHS President Adrian Lund said in a statement.

"Most drivers when they buy a auto they think the passenger is going to be protected as well as they are". The institute's Top Safety Pick+ winners include small cars, midsize cars, large luxury cars and midsize SUVs.

Leading the way for the most Top Safety awards are Hyundai and Subaru. Check out the full list of models that qualify.

The awarded vehicles went through a number of crash tests to show they can protect occupants in front-, side-, rollover and rear-impact collisions, as well as tests of their emergency braking systems.

The IIHS which conducts crash tests and evaluates automobile safety standards says it's pleased with how well manufacturers are making the grade. In line with Cars.com's long-standing ethics policy, editors and reviewers don't accept gifts or free trips from automakers.
