Democratic Women in Senate Call on Al Franken to Resign

Sen. Al Franken AP

Al Franken (D-Minn.) announced his resignation from the Senate Thursday amid sexual harassment allegations. The official spoke to Franken and separately to Franken's staff.

"[Gillibrand] is an opportunist and a phony", Carlson said of the junior senator, who took the seat of Hillary Clinton after being appointed by then-Gov. "No final decision has been made and the senator is still talking with his family", the tweet read.

Franken's resignation comes a day after many of his fellow Democratic senators - including New York's Kristen Gillibrand, California's Kamala Harris, Ohio's Sherrod Brown and Missouri's Claire McCaskill - called upon Franken to step down from his role on Wednesday.

He expressed his own distaste for Franken but asked what any viewer would think if such a thing happened to them. "Others I remember differently". "I am confident he will make the right decision".

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called him immediately after the Politico story appeared and said he needed to relinquish his Senate seat, according to a person familiar with the events. A former Democratic congressional aide said Al Franken tried to forcibly kiss her after a taping of his radio show in 2006, three years before he became a USA senator. She said that when she tried to leave the room, Franken told her, "It's my right as an entertainer". She said she was gathering her belongings to follow her boss out of the room.

She added, "I am sad that he took that time to still deny and say that some of this stuff wasn't true".

"I, of all people, am aware that there is some irony in the fact I am leaving while a man who bragged on tape about his history of the sexual assault sits in the Oval Office, and a man who repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the Senate with the full support of his party", Franken said. The only requirements are that it is a Minnesota resident, at least 30 years old, and a USA citizen for at least nine years.

Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., arrives on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday morning, December 7, 2017. He or she could be a short-time placeholder. In November 2018, the state would hold a special election for a candidate to complete Franken's term, which ends in 2020. The name most often mentioned is Lt. Gov. Tina Smith.

Minnesota's governor, Democrat Mark Dayton, said he will be announcing a temporary replacement for Franken in the weeks ahead. The victor of that election will serve until 2020, when he or she would decide whether to run again for a new six-year term.
