New Brunswickers lost their jobs in November: StatsCan

Falling exports slowed the overall economy Stats Can says THE CANADIAN PRESS Chris Young

But the size of the labour force increased to 88,100, up from 87,400.

Unemployment was 6.8 per cent in November 2016 and 8.6 per cent in November 2015. The Ontario jobless rate now sits at 5.5%, the lowest it has been since the summer of 2000.

The Canadian labor market continues to defy expectations, as the economy recorded the biggest one-month job gain in almost six years while the unemployment rate dropped below the 6% mark to a fresh post-crisis low.

"It looks like there were more people searching for work", says Stats Canada analyst Andrew Fields.

Economists had expected an increase of 10,000 jobs and the unemployment rate to come in at 6.2 per cent, according to Thomson Reuters.

The November jobs numbers marked Canada's 12th straight month of positive job creation.

More seniors are also staying in the workforce, with one-fifth of workers over 65 staying on the job in 2016 - twice the rate of a decade earlier. Thomas jobless rate remained at 6.3% last month.

The report also found a gain of 83,000 employee jobs, compared with a drop in 3,500 self-employed positions, which is a category that includes people who work in a family business without pay. The province has gained 34,000 full-time jobs over the past year.

Factory jobs rose 37,400 last month, while the services sector added 42,100 positions. British Columbia added 18,200 jobs for a 0.7 per cent increase and Quebec created 16,200 positions for a 0.4 per cent increase.

The census numbers are a stark contrast to Friday's job numbers, which showed Canada adding 390,000 net new jobs over the past year, representing a 2.1 per cent increase in total jobs - faster than population growth. The consensus call among traders was for a 10,000-job advance, according to economists at Royal Bank of Canada.

The report said the increase in real gross domestic product was driven by a one per cent expansion in household spending.
