Michael Flynn to Plead Guilty Over False Statements to Federal Bureau of Investigation

Fox reporter Flynn was charged with ‘Martha Stewart Statute

A source closed to President Donald Trump said the latest developments surrounding his former national security advisor Michael Flynn are "very, very, very bad," according to NBC News.

Flynn also agreed to cooperate with Mueller's probe, which focuses on Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible coordination between Russia and Trump's team in the campaign that sent the Republican businessman to the White House.

Michael Flynn, right, leaves federal court on Friday. The statement is the first indication that Flynn is cooperating with the special counsel's office.

Because the Obama administration had expelled 35 Russian diplomats that same day to retaliate against Moscow's meddling in the 2016 campaign, my column posed the basic question: "What did Flynn say, and did it undercut the US sanctions?"

Here's what you need to know about Michael Flynn's guilty plea.

They also provide the clearest picture yet of coordination between Flynn and other Trump advisers in contacting Russian officials to influence worldwide policy.

"The Statement of the Offense included important new details, including that Flynn was directed by a senior transition official to contact Russian officials in an effort to influence Russia's response to the Obama Administration's imposition of sanctions and the UN Security Council resolution vote on Israeli settlements, and, crucially, that he reported back to transition officials", he said.

President Donald Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn released a statement following the news that he has been charged with making false statements to federal investigators about his conversations last December with Russia's ambassador to the USA at the time, Sergey Kislyak.

Previous reports have purported that Flynn spoke with then-Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak shortly after President Barack Obama imposed sanctions on Russia.

Flynn is the first person inside President Donald Trump's administration to be reached by special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

In a January 24 interview with investigators, Flynn denied having asked Kislyak to moderate Russia's response to new sanctions and the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats, announced by Obama in retaliation for Moscow's interference in the 2016 election.

The Obama administration imposes sanctions on Russian Federation in retaliation for Russia's hacking of the Democratic National Committee in the summer and other efforts to interfere with the USA election.

Flynn was forced to resign in February after intelligence leaks showed he had lied to Pence and other senior U.S. government officials about his conversations with Kislyak in late December, when Trump was still president-elect. The disgraced Flynn - who was sacked for covering up his interactions last December with Sergei Kislyak, then Russia's ambassador to the United States - pleaded guilty to charges filed by Mueller that Flynn lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about those talks with Kislyak.

A lawyer for Flynn informs Trump's lawyers that they can no longer share information with the White House. The next day, Trump met privately with then-FBI Director James B. Comey. This part of the circle closed Friday, as Mueller obtained a guilty plea from the man Trump had sought to protect from investigation.
