Kevin Rojas was handed life in prison for shooting an undercover cop who pulled him over for driving erratically in Florida. The cop spotted a Cadillac driving recklessly, driven by Rojas, who was 19 at the time. He was shot after police officers zoned in on him. The officer was sporting a ballistic vest that said "police" on it at the time, WLTV reports. He hit him three times.

Despite being shot, the detective got out of his vehicle and returned fire before Rojas ran off.

Kevin Rojas, the 21-year-old who shot a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office officer during a gun battle in 2016, was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday.

Rojas was pulled over by the cop when he fired through the windscreen, striking the officer three times including once in the face. "When I brought the fight back to you, you ran like a coward".

In October, Rojas was found guilty of numerous felonies, including attempted first-degree murder, grand theft auto, attempted manslaughter, two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

Brandishing a tube of K-Y Jelly, a personal lubricant, the officer told Rojas, "You are going to need a lot of this".

When questioned by a judge in a 30-minute hearing about the stunt, the officer refused to comment, the Times-Union reported.

Rojas will have to serve at least 25 years before he is eligible for parole.

"Obviously that day changed my life, and it will never be the same", the officer, who hasn't been named to protect his undercover work, said in court, News4Jax reports.

"It only took for me to look away for one second, and he was already on top of me trying to kill me", the detective said. The son wasn't injured, and the detective managed to shoot Rojas before he fled the scene, according to the station.
