It's Official! Chip Kelly is New UCLA Bruins Football Head Coach

Chip Kelly

UCLA says it has hired Chip Kelly as its coach, bringing the former OR coach back to the Pac-12 after he tried his hand in the NFL.

Kelly agreed to a five-year contract worth $23.3 million with a $9 million reciprocal buyout.

Kelly thrived in four seasons at OR between 2009 and 2012, leading the Ducks to to four Pac-10/12 titles, a BCS National Championship Game appearance, a Rose Bowl championship and a Fiesta Bowl Championship.

UCLA fired Jim Mora last Sunday following a loss to rival USC in a battle of top quarterback prospects, the Bruins' Josh Rosen and the Trojans' Sam Darnold. In some ways, passing on Florida to take the UCLA job is jarring on the surface but, in the same breath, the Bruins seemingly fit Kelly's personality a bit better than a partnership in Gainesville would have.

Chip Kelly appears headed back to the school.

FOX Sports college football reporter Bruce Feldman said on Saturday that Kelly was impressed with Florida and "really liked the UF brass".

He began his head coaching career at the University of OR in 2009, leading the Ducks to a 10-3 record and a trip to the Rose Bowl in his first year at the helm. The Ducks played in a BCS bowl in each of his four seasons and made the National Championship game following the 2010 season. Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch was named interim head coach for the remainder of the season. He was slapped with "failure to monitor" in the Will Lyles case after he was accused of paying $25,000 to the 7-on-7 coach in exchange for him guiding players to the Ducks. Since then Kelly has been working as an analyst for ESPN.

Kelly met with UCLA officials Tuesday, according to multiple reports. Under Mora, the Bruins dropped six straight games against ranked programs.
