World Leaders Condemn Egypt Mosque Attacks, Calls For Collective Action Against Terrorism

Egypt mosque attack

Friday's attack has been declared as an unprecedented attack and President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi said those responsible for it will be responded with "brute force".

"I am deeply saddened by the cowardly terrorist act that targeted a mosque, in northern Sinai, and resulting deaths and injuries, the Crown Prince said".

U.S. President Donald Trump, in a post on Twitter on Friday, called the assault a "horrible and cowardly terrorist attack".

Dozens were injured and killed in Sinai during one of the country's deadliest attacks in recent memory, state media and eyewitnesses said.

A Ministry of Health spokesman said the terrorists set off a bomb during the attack.

Egypt has launched a prolonged anti-terror crackdown few years ago, trying to unroot extremists based in North Sinai.

The official Al-Ahram newspaper reported on its website that at least 115 people were killed and 80 wounded in the attack, which is unprecedented in a four-year insurgency by Islamist extremist groups. The attack took place as worshipers were listening to a sermon during prayers on the Islamic Sabbath. Two groups were firing at ambulances to deter them, said Mohamed, a witness.

Arabiya news channel and some local sources said some of the worshippers were Sufis, whom groups such as Islamic State consider targets because they revere saints and shrines, which for Islamists is tantamount to idolatry.

The Sinai branch is one of Islamic State's surviving branches following the collapse of its self-declared caliphate in Syria and Iraq after military defeats by US -backed forces.

Security has always been one of the key sources of public support for the former general, who is expected to run for re-election for another four-year term early next year.

"There is no difference between terrorism harming Egypt and terrorism harming other countries". The mosque attack, however, marks a major escalation in the conflict.

Numerous bloodiest attacks are directed at the country's Coptic Christians, who comprise just 10 percent of Egypt's population and who are targeted by the nation's radical Islamist elements.

Egyptians gather around bodies following a gun and bombing attack at the Rawda mosque in North Sinai, Egypt, on November 24, 2017.
