Uber paid off hackers in attempt to hide theft

The Uber data breach occurred in October 2016

The San Francisco-based startup confirmed a Bloomberg story on Tuesday that hackers stole the personal data of millions of users, including the names and driver's license numbers of 600,000 of its drivers, in October 2016.

Law firm Keller Rohrback put out word on Wednesday that it is looking into the potential for a class action suit against Uber. The news service also said that Uber concealed the attack for more than a year.

Britain's data protection authority said it would work with agencies in the United Kingdom and overseas to investigate the matter.

Uber's former CEO Travis Kalanick, who was ousted in June of this year, reportedly knew about the hack shortly after it happened. "We subsequently identified the individuals and obtained assurances that the downloaded data had been destroyed".

"On the hacker side, there is aggregation, tying disparate data sets together", Weafer said.

A total of 57 million names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers of the app's users around the world were downloaded by hackers.

Uber is now going to inform individuals who had their information stolen about the thefts, and will provide free credit monitoring for drivers.

"None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it", Mr Khosrowshahi said in a blog post.

Bloomberg first reported news of the hack.

Corporate cover-ups of often-serious data breaches are all too common, RSA APJ chief cyber security advisor Len Kleinman recently told CSO Australia while warning that "if you were involved in this space and managing incidents, you would be aghast at how much is actually kept quiet or swept under the carpets". "Controls to alert on suspicious data access do exist, but my guess is that they were not used, which is all too typical in today's enterprises". "We are changing the way we do business".

Dan Panesar, vice-president for Certes Networks in Europe, said transparency is crucial when it comes to the loss of personal data. Tuesday's data breach notification falls within that time frame. Guruswamy said. "It sounds to me like the $100,000 went, not to protect the consumers, but to keep it from getting out in the news". "Instead, the model needs to include a step that limits the damage - containment".

Uber said earlier this month it had struck an agreement to allow Japan'sSoftBank Group to invest up to $10 billion, most of it by buying shares from existing investors.
