Suspect in NY terror attack indicted on murder, terrorism charges

Uber passenger recalls ride with Sayfullo Saipov days before NYC attack

The man accused of driving a rental truck onto a crowded Manhattan sidewalk in an attack inspired by Islamic State, killing eight people and injuring 12 others, will face murder and terrorism charges in federal court in NY.

The indictment includes charges that Saipov provided material support to the Islamic State group, and it includes numerous offenses that can carry the death penalty upon conviction.

Sayfullo Saipov, 29, faces eight counts of murder in aid of racketeering in the gruesome truck attack along a bike path on Halloween.

Former Attorney General Michael Mukasey reacts to what the USA should be doing in response to the threat.

"Sayfullo Saipov murdered eight innocent people and injured many more in a calculated act of terrorism in the heart of one of our great cities", Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Tuesday.

When Saipov reached Houston St., he steered the truck onto the bike lane and pedestrian path of the West Side Highway, court papers said. "And like New York City's response to his alleged attack, we expect that justice in this case will be swift, firm, and resolute", said Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Joon H. Kim.

William Sweeney, the head of New York's Federal Bureau of Investigation office, said that despite Saipov's "intentions to inflict significant damage, death, and injury to innocent victims", the indictment shows "that the rule of law will always prevail".

Mr Saipov, an Uzbek immigrant, was hospitalised after he was shot by a police officer and arrested.

Saipov told investigators he was inspired by ISIS videos to use a truck in the attack, according to a complaint. Cops found two cell phones and a stun gun in his truck.

Saipov came to the USA legally in 2010 from Uzbekistan, where officials say he had no history of trouble with the law. One of the phones was filled with almost 90 ISIS propaganda videos, the feds have said. He most recently lived in New Jersey with his wife and children, and worked as an Uber driver.

Saipov allegedly admitted to planning an attack about a year ago and made a decision to use the truck two months ago. The other phone showed a search for truck-rental outlets.
