Foxconn Reportedly Used Illegal Student Labour To Manufacture iPhone Xs

Crowds of Chinese job seekers queue up outside the Foxconn factory in Shenzhen in 2012

Apple, the tech giant, has been making 3,000 interns do illegal overtime for speeding up the launch of its prestigious iPhone X, according to a report by the Financial Times. She also said that they "are being forced" by their school to work at the factory, adding that her work on the iPhone X assembly line "has nothing to do with our studies". At the time Cook and senior vice president of operations Jeff Williams said in an internal email they were "deeply offended by the suggestion that Apple would break a promise to the workers in our supply chain or mislead our customers in any way". Foxconn also said "all work was voluntary and compensated appropriately, [but] the interns did work overtime in violation of our policy" for a 40-hour cap.

"We've confirmed the students worked voluntarily, were compensated and provided benefits, but they should not have been allowed to work overtime", an Apple spokesperson said.

Foxconn and Apple have come under scrutiny for conditions and circumstances of labor in China before. She assembles up to 1,200 cameras for the iPhone X daily. We know our work is never done and we'll continue to do all we can to make a positive impact and protect workers in our supply chain.

The spokesperson said Foxconn would work with local governments and vocational schools to organize its internship program. The school declined to comment when contacted by the Financial Times. According to those reports, the company and its production partners were struggling to keep up with their shipment goals on the phone.

According to early rumors, it's possible that Samsung is working on FaceID-like features for it's next iteration of the Galaxy smartphone as it looks to better position itself against Apple's iPhone X. However, early rumors on the device point to plenty of software upgrades for the S9 with limited improvements in the actual hardware.

In 2012, there were reports of riots, suicides, and poor working conditions that ultimately forced Apple to ask the Fair Labor Association to inspect the Foxconn factory conditions. However, this year the company released two new iPhones for the first time, putting extra pressure on its suppliers and assemblers to churn out millions of handsets ahead of the key holiday shopping season.
