Arab League leaders slam Iran amid regional tensions

Iran Accuses Saudi Arabia of Pushing for War

According to the members of the panel, the tightening of Yemen's blockade by the Saudi-led coalition and the invocation by Saudi Arabia of paragraph 14 of resolution 2216, which allows United Nations member states to take measures to prevent the transfer of military goods to Houthis, is allegedly an attempt to impede the delivery of humanitarian aid to Yemeni civilians. "We have not taken a decision to ask the Security Council to meet, but we are just briefing the council and maybe the next stage would be for us to meet and call for a Security Council meeting and submit a draft Arab resolution (against Iran)". On Saturday, Mr Hariri was in Paris, where he met French president Emmanuel Macron. Hariri cited Iran and Hezballah for meddling in regional affairs and expressed fear of a plot to assassinate him. "Any leniency in dealing with their policies would only encourage them more, so we must stand together", the Saudi Foreign Minister added.

Saad Hariri will head to Egypt on Tuesday after the Arab League accused Iran of "aggression" against Arab states. Saudi authorities claimed of destroying the missile before reaching its destination while Houthis said that the missile hit the target successfully. Iran's backing for militias such as Hezbollah have helped defeat ISIS, but have also greatly expanded Iran's foothold in the region, incurring the wrath of Saudi Arabia.

Lebanese foreign minister Gebran Bassil -a member of the Hizbollah-allied Free Patriotic Movement and the Lebanese president's son-in-law - did not attend the Cairo meeting.

Bahrain's Foreign Minister, Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa, said the Iranian-backed Hezbollah is "Iran's biggest arm in the region at the moment" and is in "total control" of Lebanon.

"We say it in clear terms that Iranian threats have exceeded all boundaries and are pushing the region toward the abyss".

He even went on saying that missile which was sacked by Houthis towards Riyadh was "Iranian made" and called is as an "unacceptable Iranian message".

"That's quite ironic", the top diplomat said.

Yemen's foreign minister told the Arab League in Cairo that "the Iran regime has pushed too far through its proxy, the Houthis, in annihilating Yemenis", SABA reported.

On Sunday Arab League members adopted a resolution saying they would hold the "terrorist Lebanese Hezbollah. responsible for supporting terrorism and terrorist organisations in Arab countries, with modern weapons and ballistic missiles". The Syrian government, backed by Russian Federation and Iran, was replaced by the pro-rebel Syrian National Coalition in the Arab League in 2013, but the Syrian seat was again vacated in 2014.
