2.6 million Floridians to travel during Thanksgiving holiday, AAA says

AAA: More than 1.6 million Michiganders will celebrate Thanksgiving with holiday getaway

Roughly 50.9 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more away from home November 22-26, a 3.3 percent increase over past year and the most since 2005, Heathrow, Florida-based AAA said in a report released on Thursday. "Oil prices reached 2-year highs last week, causing the sudden jump at the pump".

This coming Thanksgiving is expected to be another record breaker when it comes to travel.

The auto club earlier reported that gas prices in the Sarasota-Manatee region surged by 18 cents per gallon since last week and were averaging 41 cents higher than a year ago.

Most travellers - about 90 per cent, or 45.5 million people - will be on the road; a 3.2 per cent increase in automobile traffic over last year's holiday, according to the pre-holiday analysis. That's despite a higher national average for petrol prices over last year.

Springfield averages $2.54 a gallon, according to AAA.

"So many more people are doing pre-holiday trips to take in all the experiences created to get people into the spirit of the season", said travel expert Jeanenne Tornatore. The organization said a strengthening economy and consumer confidence have prompted Americans to be willing to spend more on travel. Prices were at $2.56 a gallon on Wednesday, about 10 percent above past year, AAA said.

This a 3.3 percent increase from last years projections, which will bring 1.6 million more people on to the nation's roads, skies, rails and waterways compared with last year. "These factors should help fuel consumer spending and generate a strong finish for the travel industry this year". Air fares are at their lowest levels in five years for a round-trip flight for the top 40 domestic routes, AAA said. Nationally, Anaheim, site of the Disneyland Resort, is expected to be the second most popular Thanksgiving destination, according to the AAA.
