Netanyahu says to continue military operation in Syria

Israel will continue 'acting in Syria', Netanyahu tells US & Russia

"This shows the true face of the Iranian regime", the official commented.

With regards to Iran, we will simply not allow for Shi'ite consolidation and Iranian entrenchment in Syria nor will we allow Syria to become a forward operating base against the State of Israel.

Netanyahu has also been outspoken about opposing Iran, claiming the Islamist nation to be a grave threat to the entire region. The global community has not recognized Israel's annexation of the Golan Heights.

According to the official version of the agreement signed over the weekend, all foreign forces, including the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and the Iran-affiliated Shiite militias-most notably Hezbollah, must leave Syrian territory.

Israel is apprehensive of the deal because Iran is allowed to establish itself 7 km (4.5 miles) from it northern border, a distance Jerusalem insists is not satisfactory for its security needs. In Washington, a USA official confirmed its authenticity, but said the deal was only preliminary and still subject to changes.

Tel Aviv revealed, Monday, a secret meeting held last week between IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot and US General Curtis Scaparrotti in Brussels - it meant to discuss Iran's dominance in Syria and intention to impose its presence in the region via installing land and navy military bases.

He was apparently responding to Russia's statement that it viewed Iran's presence in Syria as "legitimate."

"We maintain the right to act freely and the only consideration guiding us is the security of the state of Israel", he said.

As the USA national security team arrived in Israel, Russia's foreign minister Sergey Lavrov announced that Iran's presence in Syria is "legitimate" and the agreement reached with US does not include Iran-linked militias.

"While the USA [with Russia] has made the south-west de-escalation zone a priority in its Syria policy, it has no realistic means of actually rolling back Iranian influence across the border", said Mr Schneider.
