Russian Federation posts videogame image as 'irrefutable proof' United States helps IS

The Latest: Syria calls on US to withdraw its troops

The Russian Ministry of Defence has used a videogame screenshot to accuse the U.S. of cooperating with ISIS.

Russia's military admitted Tuesday that footage it initially claimed showed cooperation between the US and the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) in Syria actually originated from a computer game, but defended its findings with alternative evidence. Russia said the Americans actively interfered with Russian airstrikes, to provide cover for the Isis fighters.

"The US are actually covering the ISIS combat units to recover their combat capabilities, redeploy, and use them to promote the American interests in the Middle East", the statement said.

But the monitor Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT), along with a number of social media users, was quick to compare one of the images with an identical still from the wargame "AC-130 Gunship Simulator: Special Ops Squadron".

Russia's Defense Ministry earlier on Tuesday published photographs that it said proved that U.S. forces refrained from launching airstrikes against forces of the Islamic State terror group as they fled Syria's Al Bukamal. The Twitter post has since been deleted.

The Russian Defense Ministry made a fool of itself today when it posted on Twitter and Facebook "irrefutable evidence" that the United States aided ISIS, which turned out to be screengrabs from a well-known video game and a video published online by the Iraqi military in 2016.

The ministry said US-led coalition planes instead tried to impede Russian Aerospace Forces operations in the area.

But none of the images are from Abu Kamal, and none are from November 9. It's not actually from a drone, but from a video game.

The ministry is investigating its civil employee who attached a wrong photo to illustrate the ministry's statement on Abu Kamal.

Responding to Russia's allegations in remarks carried by Reuters, a spokesman for the US-led coalition Col Ryan Dillon said the Russian allegations were "about as accurate as their air campaign".
