Hamilton in heavy Brazil crash, starts from back

Simon Lazenby is joined by Martin Brundle and Johnny Herbert to preview the major talking points ahead of the Brazilian GP

Hamilton and his Mercedes-Benz team are in Sao Paulo for Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix.

Mercedes has confirmed Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix from pit lane after the team opted to break parc ferme conditions to make changes on his Formula 1 auto ahead of the race.

However, he won't be able to catch Hamilton, who wrapped up his fourth world title last time out in Mexico, but Bottas has his sights firmly set on the Brit for 2018.

Although Interlagos is a short track, the gap of just 0.058s between Bottas in first place and Sebastian Vettel in fourth was remarkably slim in the final practice session ahead of qualifying.

Another Finn Kimi Raikkonen qualified third in the second Ferrari ahead of Max Verstappen and his Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, who faces a grid penalty for the race.

"I'm okay. It happened really quickly". The laps were getting better and better, but it was all the time very close, so I'm pleased that in the end I could get it all together in Q3, get a good lap and put it on pole. I chickened out a little bit with the brakes.

"It was a shame that Lewis is out, a shame for us, but I stood up for the team and it is good to start from pole position here". I was already too slow by that point.

Bottas is 15 points adrift of Vettel in the battle over second place in the drivers' standings and will close the gap if he can finish ahead of the German in Sunday's 71-lap race. It was just a nice lap.

"Obviously, Lewis was out in the beginning which was a shame for us but I'm happy that I could stand up for us".

"It's really good to start on the pole here, we have a good auto, it's going to be a close race still with Ferrari, but I'd rather start from pole than, for example, from P3".
