Debuts For Abraham, Loftus-Cheek and Pickford

Ruben Loftus-Cheek had 'vision' to leave Chelsea and accelerate career

Chelsea's Ruben Loftus-Cheek, now on loan at Crystal Palace, was one of five players to make his debut against the world's top-ranked side and produced a man-of-the match display.

Tammy Abraham proved a handful during his first 60 minutes of worldwide football and man of the match Ruben Loftus-Cheek flourished under the Wembley floodlights, as did fellow debutant Jordan Pickford.

World Cup preparations kicked off with a promising goalless draw against holders Germany at Wembley on Friday, with five-time champions Brazil providing the opposition on Tuesday.

The Chelsea midfielder, now on loan at Crystal Palace, was named best afield for the night.

The 23-year-old Everton 'keeper's highlights saw him twice deny Timo Werner with sublime low saves in the first half, though his display did not come as a surprise to Southgate.

Gareth Southgate's England squad had been crippled with injuries in the run-up to the friendly and it gave the former England Under-21 boss the opportunity to hand some of his former starlets a chance.

"I think we did well".

"He's got so many good attributes and that's why we put him into the team". I certainly learned a lot.

The England midfield has often been accused of lacking the creativity to unlock the opposition but with fitness concerns over Jack Wilshere and his failure to secure a regular place in the Arsenal team, Southgate could have finally found the answer to that problem.

"If we won it would have been better but I'm really happy", he said.

The 20-year-old has previously played for the Under-16s through to the Under-21s.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek will make his worldwide debut in midfield, while Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is also in line to win his first cap for England against the world champions.

"He's an exciting player - we've got a few exciting players".

"I see things in him that lead me to believe he can play at this level and I think he showed that tonight".

England manager Gareth Southgate hailed Loftus-Cheek as a player who can achieve "anything" after the game.
