Facebook Wants Nude Pics to Combat Revenge Porn

Facebook Wants You To Upload Nudes Of Yourself To Stop Revenge Porn

The company won't store the images directly but create a hash out of them using the anti-revenge porn tool.

Would you send Facebook an explicit image to prevent it from being shared?

If you think your nude photos could end up on Facebook or Instagram, you can send a copy of the photo through Facebook Messenger to company officials.

It's done by first contacting the e-safety commissioner or regional equivalent (e-safety commissioner is an Australian position, and this test is being carried out in Australia), after which, you will then be advised to send the photo to yourself.

The move follows on from Facebook's update earlier in the year which allowed users to report images that they thought were revenge porn.

Others, however, have expressed serious concerns about the amount of trust the system requires users to put in Facebook. The same, Facebook would like us to believe, will act to prevent anyone to get along with revenge porn tactics.

"Revenge porn" is horrendous enough as it is, without technology companies making the problem worse.

Grant said the process will be similar to sending yourself an image via email but is a safer and more secure way of sending the nude images, without them going through the ether. "So if somebody tried to upload that same image, which would have the same digital footprint or hash value, it will be prevented from being uploaded", she explained.

It may seem counterintuitive, but the idea is to upload intimate photos before an abuser or hacker has a chance to share them on Facebook or Instagram without your consent.

Facebook will then be able to track the hash online with the help of the algorithms used in photos and video matching tools. Further, Facebook is asking all its users - at least in Australia for the moment - to comply with the above to deny anyone the chance to post sexually explicit material that the user might be part of.

"This pilot has the potential to disable the control and power perpetrators hold over victims, particularly in cases of ex-partner retribution and sextortion, and the subsequent harm that could come to them", said Inman Grant.

Because of these high numbers, Carrie Goldberg, a lawyer who specializes in sexual privacy, welcomed Facebook's revenge porn plan.
