Koenigsegg Agera RS Is Now The World's Fastest Car

277mph Koenigsegg Agera RS is the new fastest car in the world

At the same time, I'm extremely jealous of the pure, unfiltered speed driver Niklas Lilja must have felt.

The hypercar was driven on two runs in opposite directions of an 11-mile stretch of closed public highway between Las Vegas and Pahrump. Lau also said that, since the event wasn't a tightly embargoed automaker event, some misinformation was leaking throughout the day - like a reported top speed of 291 miles per hour.

According to Jim Lau from Racelogic - the folks who helped verify the speed with various VBox data loggers - the event was actually put on by Koenigsegg owners. At the time, it narrowly took the record from the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which had recorded a 269.86mph time.

Hennessey failed to take the speed record, however, because the vehicle only completed one run and the title-holder is required to make two runs down the same stretch of tarmac in opposite directions.

The Agera RS has a 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing a staggering 1,380bhp. Koenigsegg CEO and founder Christian von Koenigsegg was also present for the epic run. The closure was set to be in place for two days but the Koenigsegg team broke the record early on the first day. The company beat its own record for the 0-400-0 kph (0-248.54-0 mph) run. It's so fast in fact that it can accelerate from 0-249mph and back to 0 in just 36.44 seconds. In comparison, Bugatti's Chiron needs about 42 seconds to achieve the same feat. Responsible for sending the power to the pavement was reportedly a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires - the standard tire for the Agera - which seemed to survive the high-speed stint without a hitch.
