Broadcom is reportedly interested in purchasing Qualcomm

Markets Insider

This time the San Diego chipmaker is suing Apple for allegedly sharing proprietary Qualcomm technologies with its market rival, Intel.

Broadcom, which has a market value of $110 billion, just announced on Thursday that it's moving its headquarters to the United States from Singapore.

Communications chipmaker Broadcom Ltd is planning to unveil a bid for smartphone chip supplier Qualcomm Inc by Monday, two sources familiar with the matter said on Friday, an attempt to create a roughly $200-billion company in what would be the biggest technology acquisition ever. Shares are down almost 16% this year due to legal battles with Apple and the loss of royalties from Apple and an unnamed second licensee. As such, if Broadcom were to own Qualcomm, the resulting entity would be in a better position to negotiate with the likes of Apple and Samsung.

The reports came one day after Tan held a news conference with President Trump to announce that Broadcom, now based in Singapore with a primary USA office in San Jose, plans to move its corporate domicile to the United States.

Broadcom, a major supplier of iPhone parts that counts Apple among its largest customers, said this week it will return its headquarters to the US from Singapore.

The $100 billion bid would be far from a sure thing if made official, however.

Broadcom did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A legal battle with Apple is costing revenue and jeopardizing a business model that for years made Qualcomm one of the most successful chipmakers.

At the company's 4G/5G Summit taking place in Hong Kong, Qualcomm has announced the first successful test of a 5G data connection on its 5G modem chip-set for mobile devices - the X50. It's entirely unclear what would happen to Qualcomm's legal fight with Apple if it does sell itself, but it's likely Broadcom would settle the dispute to avoid incurring more legal costs.

Both firms have been in the news the last few days.
