'We must not allow ISIS to return' to US - Donald Trump

President Trump reacted to the terror attack in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday by saying it was done by a “sick and deranged person.”

President Trump called for the Department of Homeland Security to "step up" its "extreme vetting program" after the terror attack in New York City Tuesday.

Following an Isis-related attack on London Bridge that left eight dead in June, Trump published a highly charged tweet mocking London Mayor Sadiq Khan for saying that there was "no reason to be alarmed". This is the first major attack after the deadly attack in NY on September 11, 2001.

At least eight people were killed and over 10 seriously injured today after a man in a rented pickup truck mowed down pedestrians and cyclists along a busy bike path near the World Trade Center memorial.

Shortly after the incident, Trump used Twitter to condemn the attack.

Trump tweeted Tuesday night.

The terrorist suspect's identity has yet to be confirmed by police, but widespread reports citing law enforcement sources claim the suspect is 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov, an Uzbek native who gained legal status in the U.S. in 2010.

IS has been dealt a string of defeats across Iraq and Syria in recent months, with authorities anxious that fleeing foreign fighters might return home.

"I think there's a difference between being a candidate and being the President", she had said.

"What the U.S. does in terms of its homeland security, immigration policies and visa procedures are the sovereign right of that country".

Asked on Wednesday during his first on-camera appearance since the attack to explain "how the diversity program fit into (the alleged terrorist's) plot", Trump skipped past the nut of the question. "Being politically correct is fine, but not for this!"

"My thoughts, condolences and prayers to the victims and families of the New York City terrorist attack", Trump later tweeted. He later gave a speech that warned that terrorists were being allowed to flow into the United States because of a failed immigration system and delivered a speech unveiling his proposals for "extreme vetting". The attacker was shot by the police and taken to a hospital. "Enough!" he said in another tweet. "And we have to get much less politically correct", he said during a cabinet meeting. "We are not going to be deterred".
