Under Scrutiny From Mueller, Tony Podesta Resigns From His Lobbying Firm

President Trump in a Tuesday tweet said the biggest story on Monday that has the "Dems in a dither" wasn't the indictment against his former campaign manager in the Russian Federation probe but a top Democratic lobbyist stepping down from his firm.

Podesta's decision to leave the Podesta Group was announced to the firm on Monday morning, Politico reported, and came a week after it was revealed that the government was investigating whether Podesta violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act, which requires individuals that lobby for foreign entities to disclose activities on behalf of those entities to the Department of Justice.

One of the most powerful Democrat-linked families on K-Street continued to fight back Tuesday against the White House, Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian investigation and even Fox News for reporting on the spiraling probe.

"The biggest story yesterday, the one that has the Dems in a dither, is Podesta running from his firm", Trump tweeted.

Washington D.C. lobbyist Tony Podesta, the brother of Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, resigned from his firm Monday.

The Podesta Group previously withheld from disclosing its work under the Foreign Agents Registrant Act (FARA), claiming they believed the group was not affiliated with the Ukranian government. According to Politico, the firm recently lost some clients, and brought in $4.8 million in the third quarter of 2017, down from $6.1 million in the third quarter of 2016.

John Podesta's emails were among those leaked by Russian hackers following their entry into the servers of the Democratic National Committee in October 2016.

A spokeswoman for Mercury could not be reached for comment.

Podesta was the chairman of Podesta Group - a namesake firm that he also founded.

Manafort and Gates attempted to distance themselves from the work of the lobbying firms after press reports in August 2016, according to the indictment.

Manafort allegedly enlisted the help of The Podesta Group, which did work for a group known as the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine. Carlson also reported that Manafort's company, the European Center for a Modern Ukraine, was a major client of the Podesta group.

Mercury said in a statement that it "takes its obligations to follow all laws, rules and regulations very seriously" and "has and will continue to fully cooperate with the Office of the Special Counsel in its investigation".

After the arrest of Paul Manafort on Monday, Hillary Clinton bundler Tony Podesta announced he would be stepping down from leading the Podesta Group and that the firm would dissolve. "If you want something done in Washington, DC, you go to Tony Podesta", his website advertises.
