New Orleans legend Fats Domino is remembered by those he influenced

Fats Domino

Fats Domino died on Tuesday, October 24, at the age of 89.

Domino's best-known for his piano-based hits of the 1950s and early "60s like "Blueberry Hill", "Ain't That a Shame", "Blue Monday", "Walkin" to New Orleans" and "I'm Walkin'".

He was also honoured with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987, with Rolling Stone magazine placing him no.25 in the list of Greatest Recording Artists Of All Time. That track has spawned countless covers, not least from rock legend Elvis Presley, for whom Domino was a huge influence, and Elton John. The amiable rock "n" roll pioneer whose steady, pounding piano and easy baritone helped change popular music even as it honored the grand, good-humored tradition of the Crescent City, has died.

Domino also performed in two wildly influential rock movies of 1956: Shake, Rattle & Rock! and The Girl Can't Help It, films that spread the news of rock & roll throughout the country and overseas.

Many celebrities took to Twitter to express mourning and praise.

On the lower level of the Rock Hall, a large portrait of Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis is prominently shown on a sliding panel door between exhibits.

In honor of his vast influence to music, the portly piano-playing prodigy was honored with an induction into the Rock "n" Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987. RIP, ' wrote Wendell Pierce.

He was born Antoine Domino on February 26 1928 in New Orleans, the son of a labourer who worked. He lost his National Award for Arts, which was awarded by Bill Clinton, and his gold records. President George W. Bush personally delivered its replacement. He also produced new music well into the 2000's.
