House Republicans investigating Obama-era uranium deal

The decisions include the FBI's handling of Hillary Clinton's email probe and its timeline, as well as the FBI's decision not to announce the investigation into possible collusion between then-candidate Donald Trump and Russian Federation.

Before the Obama administration approved a controversial deal in 2010 giving Moscow control of a large swath of American uranium, the Federal Bureau of Investigation had gathered substantial evidence that Russian nuclear industry officials were engaged in bribery, kickbacks, extortion and money laundering created to grow Vladimir Putin's atomic energy business inside the United States, according to government documents and interviews. Ousted FBI Director James Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch spoke at length to Congress about that investigation previous year, and it's the subject of an ongoing review by the Justice Department's inspector general.

At the time, Clinton was secretary of state, leading one of nine government agencies comprising CFIUS.

"The closer the investigation about real Russian ties between Trump associates and real Russians", she said on C-SPAN, "the more they want to just throw mud on the wall".

President Trump has been calling for an investigation into the uranium deal for months, NBC News reports.

Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Devin Nunes (R-CA) speaks during a presser in Capitol Hill, Washington, U.S., October 24, 2017.

The question arose as Sanders defended Trump's decision to fire Comey earlier this year, a choice Trump's former chief strategist called a mistake this week. Nunes, now the subject of an ethics inquiry for his actions, subsequently handed over the reins of the committee's investigation of Russian election meddling to Rep. K. Michael Conaway (R-Tex.), but he has not recused himself from the inquiry.

The Uranium One deal involved selling part of a Canadian-based mining company to the Russian nuclear corporation Rosatom, giving the company control of more than 20 percent of America's uranium supply. He made those allegations after visiting the White House, leading Democrats to accuse him of coordinating his efforts with the Trump administration. But when asked whether he would brief the White House in the future, he would not commit to continuing to steer clear of the administration.

The two panels have declined to investigate Russia's interference in the 2016 elections, leaving those probes to Senate committees and the House intelligence committee. On Monday, Clinton called GOP concerns about the deal "baloney".

In launching this new investigation, Nunes is adding congressional muscle to a right-wing narrative that has cast Clinton as cozying up to Russian Federation.
