Breast cancer linked to bacteria

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at City Island raised more than $650000, organizers say

"Of course, some of that is genetic, but three out of four women who develop breast cancer have no family history of the disease", explained Crestwood Women's Center Breast Care Manager, Julie McCain.

The finding is expected to allow researchers to develop a simple blood test within five years to be used in conjunction with a breast screening to help pinpoint specific genes associated with breast cancer.

Professor Jacques Simard, from Laval University in Quebec city, Canada, another member of the worldwide team, said: 'Using data from genomic studies, combined with information on other known risk factors, will allow better breast cancer risk assessment, therefore helping to identify a small but meaningful proportion of women at high risk of breast cancer. Dr. Grear said, "We see a lot of families that have very strong family histories but come back without a genetic mutation and we know there might be something else". As detailed earlier, most of the research has shown that people who increase their physical activity, improve their diet and stay at a healthy weight reduce their risk of chronic diseases and cancer.

Researchers from Quebec city are now hoping to obtain the necessary financing to assess the feasibility and acceptability of this new method of assessing the risk of breast cancer. Various studies suggest that a moderately active lifestyle with at least 30 minutes of exercising five days a week and a balanced diet can go a long way in protecting women from the risk of breast cancer.

Some 107 genes already linked to breast cancer were confirmed while scientists found 72 new ones. A team at the Cleveland Clinic found differences in the types and amounts of bacteria between cancerous and non-cancerous breast tissue.

"Imagine if we could, instead of giving chemotherapy that not only hits the cancer but every cell in the body, imagine if we could just give something that targets the cancer, wherever it may be, breast or otherwise", Eng said.

'This should provide guidance for a lot of future research, ' he added.

Herrin says most men don't think they will get breast cancer.

"But there are other risk factors".

A further seven genes were identified specifically in association with breast cancers that lacked oestrogen receptors, which don't tend to respond to hormone based therapies.

QIMR Berghofer's Professor Georgia Chenevix-Trench, who helped co-lead the global collaboration, said the discovery nearly doubled what researchers already knew about existing genetic markers.
