Richard Spencer And Free Speech On College Campuses — Intersection

The mitzvah pledge made by Fuchs

Three men were arrested on Friday for allegedly being involved in a shooting that broke out right after white nationalist Richard Spencer's controversial speaking event at the University of Florida.

Police said in a news release Friday that Tyler Tenbrink, 28, William Fears, 30, and Colton Fears, 28, all of Pasadena, Texas, were arrested on charges of attempted murder. And even after Spencer's "Unite the Right" rally on a Virginia campus in August devolved into violence and left a woman dead, UF administrators could not prevent his visit, they could only prepare for it.

Witnesses and friends of the victims told The Gainesville Sun that suspects Tyler Tenbrink, William Fears and his brother Colton Fears drove up to a group of people walking toward a bus stop and carrying anti-Nazi signs around 5:20 p.m. local time, and asked whether they'd seen someone named "Kyle". The men in the vehicle displayed Nazi salutes and shouted chants about Hitler, and one of them, identified as Tyler Tenbrink, 28, pulled out a gun. He fired a single shot, police say, missing the group and striking a nearby building. Tenbrink then fled the scene in a silver Jeep after jumping a police barricade to avoid protesters.

Gainesville Police Spokesman Ben Tobias said in a statement, "I am amazed that immediately after being shot at, a victim had the forethought to get the vehicle's license number".

According to an arrest report, the three men were in a vehicle when they stopped by a bus stop and began arguing with a man, who was in a group of six to eight people.

If the "Hail Hitler" theatrics didn't already give it away, police said at least two of the suspects have "shown connections to extremist groups".

According to the arrest report, the Fears brothers shouted "kill them" and "shoot them" at Tenbrink.

William Fears told reporters he'd been in Charlottesville, and had come to Gainesville to hear Spencer because he agreed with much of what he said. He is also being charged as a felon in possession of a firearm, police said. The investigation remains ongoing, Tobias said.

Protesters began yelling and chanting when Spencer took the stage, and he criticized them for trying to suppress his speech.
