New weapons between Trump and the NFL on the national anthem

Defensive end Olivier Vernon is the only Giants player to kneel during the national anthem

A small number of NFL players had been taking a knee during the national anthem to protest racism and police brutality since former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started the protest in 2016. More players began to protest the anthem and criticized the president for attacking their rights.

Goodell said as much in his careful, political way, saying, "We believe everyone should stand for the national anthem", but defending players who seek to express themselves as they see fit.

After the fall meetings, Goodell reiterated the league wants its players to stand during the anthem.

More than half of Americans - 52 percent - disapprove of National Football League players taking a knee during the anthem, according to a recent Quinnipiac poll. Total disrespect for our great country!

The petition came days after NFL team owners, executives and players met in NY, where they decided that the league would not implement a rule forcing players to stand for "The Star-Spangled Banner".

The petition was launched on Thursday by the Trump Make America Great Again Committee, and is the U.S. president's latest move to target the wave of protests that has seen NFL players "take a knee" while the national anthem is played before games. "That's an important part of our policy". Trump's remarks sparked a furious backlash amongst NFL players, team owners and league officials, with large-scale protests by players during the anthem in the weekend following the president's tirade. And it's also for us to honor our flag and our country, and we think our fans expect us to do that. "We did not ask for that", Goodell said.

Following Trump's comments at the rally and on Twitter, players from nearly every NFL team knelt or stood with their arms locked during the national anthem. "But really talking a lot about with the opportunity that exists with our players to try to go and really make a difference in our communities in a positive way".
