India beat Malaysia 2-1 to win third Asia Cup title

North Korea and Malaysia will play their 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers at a neutral venue

It was India's fourth win over Pakistan this year, having beaten it twice in the Hockey World League Semifinals in London and once in the pool stages here.

After two games each in Super four stage, India are on top with four points followed by Malaysia (three points), Korea (two points) and Pakistan (one point). Congrats to our hockey team for winning the Asia Cup 2017.

The Malaysian strikers despite continuous penetrations could not find the back of the net. They looked a threat for India in the second quarter too and came close to goal a few times.

The third quarter was a balanced one where Malaysia started to open up spaces in the Indian defence but all their efforts were well kept out.

The Indian midfield have been held well by skipper Manpreet Singh and Chinglensana Singh, while veteran Sardar Singh has done exceedingly well as the central defender and the linkman between the midfield and the forwards.

Before this, Malaysia's best achievement was third place in 2007 in Chennai, India.

Muhammad Shahril Saabah raised Malaysia's hopes when he collected a cross outside the penalty box and scored in the 50th minute to reduce the deficit.

Malaysia kept up the pressure on the Indian defence in the final 10 minutes of the match, but India absorbed the attacking forays made. The scoreline could have been even more for India had their players converted the numerous chances that came across during the final.

India have scored some attractive field goals in the tournament, displaying what they are best known for, one-touch attacking hockey. "But I am really happy how they played, they changed the way we defend in the end and that helped us clinch the final".

India, with this Asia Cup win, have justified their favourites tag.
