20 people feared trapped after landslide at a construction site in Penang

So far, three victims have been found dead, and one injured, while 11 others are still feared missing under the rubble at a construction site of an affordable housing project. Officials said two survivors, who were rescued were foreign workers, The Sun Daily news website reported.

Fourteen people were believed to be buried in the landslide at 8.57am today.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department director Saadon Mokhtar said the operation was called off at 8pm Saturday as it was getting dark.

The state Fire and Rescue Department is leading the rescue operation along with federal and state agencies.


"We could not determine their identities or their number yet", he said, adding that the employer could not be found.

As soon as the Bangladeshi victims are identified, the High Commission will make an arrangement to send the bodies home and then will try to realise compensation, Sayedul said.

Penang city Mayor Maimunah Mohamad Sharif said weather on the island was dry and the cause of the landslide wasn't clear.

Firemen, Civil Defence personnel, several ambulances and the police have arrived at the scene and have begun to search for the other buried victims.
