Volvo unveils first Polestar model, part of green vehicle push in China

Polestar unveils their first car as an independent company

This week, the company showed the first model that will bear its name: the sporty, 600-hp Polestar 1.

Volvo in-house tuner Polestar has been morphed into a standalone brand for high-performance electrified cars and on Tuesday we saw its first model, aptly named the Polestar 1, unveiled to the world in Shanghai. The move comes following Volvo's announcement this summer that from 2019, every vehicle in their lineup will have an electric motor.

The Polestar 1 is, uniquely enough, the first model scheduled for production in mid-2019. Orders for the auto are now being taken.

Polestar's pioneering global monthly subscription initiative is the latest in a long line of alternative new vehicle buying options, stretching back decades.

Volvo fans shouldn't be too bummed by Polestar's transition to a standalone brand. Polestar 1 measures 4,500 mm in length and compared to the Volvo S90, the wheelbase is 320 mm less and the rear has been shortened by 200 mm.

Also helping the Polestar 1 excel on twisty roads, the Öhlins Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension system fits an electronic valve to each Öhlins shock absorber, monitoring driver inputs and road conditions and making adjustments within two milliseconds to provide precisely tailored suspension performance.

It will be built at the Polestar Production Centre in Chengdu, China.

Polestar's radical all-electric approach will be matched by an equally radical method of selling its cars. Plans call for construction to be completed by mid-2018, with Polestar 1 production to follow in mid-2019.

The Polestar 1 will form a halo for the future Polestar brand. However, this year it seems like companies are vying to have a part in the electric vehicle (EV) market that Tesla first dug up.

Polestar cars will be sold "100 percent online", though the brand plans to open Polestar Spaces around the world so people can check out the vehicles in person. A single monthly payment will streamline related expenses like insurance and maintenance, and Polestar will offer pick-up/drop-off servicing for when it's time for that oil change or tire rotation.

This is where future Polestar customers can interact with products and the brand.
