Brian Storm Is Coming To The UK This Weekend!

Ophelia to hit Donegal this afternoon- experts say from circa 3pm

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for strong winds and potential flooding in parts of southern and western England and Wales on Saturday.

"Those wind speeds can cause impacts to transport and power supplies, and the potential for unsafe waves also brings risks to coastal routes and communities, as well as the potential for flooding of homes".

Ahead of the storm, a yellow warning for heavy rain has been issued for Northern Ireland.

Weather Company forecaster Dave Reynolds said "Brian" could also cause blackouts.

The storm is forming over the Atlantic on Thursday and will arrive on the west coast of Ireland on Friday night as the nation recovers from the affects of Hurricane Ophelia.

"At the moment, we don't expect the same level of impacts for the United Kingdom", he said.

Met Eireann officially named the second "home-grown" storm of the season following on from Aileen last month.

Spokesman Grahame Madge said: "Dramatic waves could pose a threat to life and there will be quite hazardous conditions along the seafront".

Experts warn the storm, dubbed Brian, will bring winds of up to 80mph just days after Hurricane Ophelia killed three people in Ireland.

The Met Office added that an explosive cyclogenesis, or weather bomb, was forecast to take place which is caused when pressure drops by 24 millibars in 24 hours.

The strong winds will also coincide with high tides "bringing the potential for risky waves", according to Met Office meteorologist Aiden McGivern.

The Met Office and Met Éireann do not rename the remnants of storms that have moved across the Atlantic, if they have already been named.

The storm also whipped up Saharan dust which caused the sky to darken and turn yellow across southern parts of the United Kingdom on Monday, while the sun appeared deep red.
