None were, but the Jackson Schools Board, aware it would likely be disbanded soon for unrelated reasons, as its final act delegated renaming power to three other schools in the system named after confederate leaders. "They are very excited about the school being named for President Obama".

A dominantly black public school in MS named after Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States in the 1860s, will be renamed after former President Barrack Obama, according to a report released Wednesday.

An elementary school in Jackson named for the president of the Confederacy will be renamed after the nation's first black president next year.

The board's attorney, Dorian Turner, was unsure at the time if they had the legal power to change the schools' names.

The Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees had approved a policy that permitted the PTA and Davis community with the control to rename the school.

The school is now named after the late Jefferson Davis.

Despite initial doubts, Turner stated on October 17 that the school would be able to change its name beginning in the 2018-19 school year.

There are now at least 20 schools across the country that bear the Obama name.

A demographic breakdown by SchoolDigger.com identifies 95 percent of the K-5 school's 2017 student body as African-American.

It's unknown how expensive the name change will be, she said. The school sits across the street from the childhood home of renowned writer Eudora Welty, who once attended class there, according to the district website. After the Confederate surrender, he was accused of treason and imprisoned for two years, but never tried. Named after the Confederate states president, the school will be stripped of its current name next year.

According to Mississippi Today, the school's parent-teacher association first asked for name requests during a meeting on September 21.
