Asia Cup: India continues rampant march, brushes aside Pakistan 3-1

The greatest hockey rivalry

It's always a big game when India face off with Pakistan. At the Hero Hockey World League Semi Final in London, India had thrashed their neighbours 7-1 in the pool stage and followed it up with a 6-1 win in the classification match.

India will now move into the second round of Super 4s where the top teams from both the pool will play in round-robin format before the knockouts.

Contrary to the win, Pakistan had the first real scoring chance when they earned their first penalty corner but they wasted it.

GOAL! Ali Shan strikes in the 48th minute as Pakistan reduce the deficit.

However, India's defence was up to the task at hand, and showed good cohesion to deny their opponents as they took the lead into half-time.

India won their 10th penalty corner of the match within seconds and this time the umpire awarded another penalty corner as Varun's effort was obstructed by Bangladeshi defenders.

India's first win, in 2003, came at Pakistan's expense in the final.

India skipper Manpreet Singh was happy with the result, but felt the team needs to make improvements in the upcoming matches.

A breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Gurjant Singh swiftly dribbled into the left flank to find Amit Rohidas perfectly poised in front of the post.

Q2 22'min: Another Penalty Corner for Pakistan! He rued the chances his forwards missed against Japan but is hopeful they won't make the same mistakes against India. The Indians extended their lead to three goals as they scored two goals in two minutes towards the end of the third quarter.

India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan 3-1 to finish top of Pool A in the ongoing Asia Cup Hockey 2017 tournament at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium on Sunday.

While Indian forward-line has showcased incredible form, the team continues to struggle with penalty corner conversion - a concern that might cost them dearly against Pakistan who will look to use this to their advantage. After beating Japan 5-1 in their opening match, the Manpreet Singh-led side mauled minnows Bangladesh 7-0 on Friday.
