Del Potro hurt as Nadal, Federer also win

Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina celebrates after defeating Alexander Zverev of Germany in their men's singles match of the Shanghai Masters tennis tournament at Qizhong Forest Sports City Tennis Center in Shanghai China Thursday Oct. 12 2017

Nadal, who extended his winning streak to 15 matches, pegged Dimitrov back with relentless baseline hitting to take the first set easily.

Nadal edged in front when he got the break of serve in the ninth game of the first set and there was nothing between them as they entered a tense second-set tie break.

"Very happy, it was a very tough match, both of us played a very high level of tennis", said the 31-year-old Spaniard, the top seed.

"I'm going to have a tough match against Grigor", Nadal said.

"I don't understand how I can lose a match where I get broken one time in three sets and not managed to get any chances on his serve", said Zverev, who is tipped to one day make world number one. The conditions have been different today than my two previous matches. "But I think he's still very young and he needs to keep learning, as he's doing now", said the Argentine, 23 in the world.

The Spaniard needed just 63 minutes to dispatch Fognini, taking his winning streak to 14 matches since the start of the US Open where he claimed a 16th grand slam title.

Cilic will face Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who beat German Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6 (4), 6-4.

"He always is very unsafe opponent, and I think this surface, this court helps him", Nadal said. "It was really a fast-court match". He's able to go for the shots from the baseline. "I would like to play and be 100 percent".

Gasquet continued to battle hard in the second - while also making a breakthrough on the Federer serve - but the Swiss was playing with his usual ruthless efficiency and two breaks of his own sealed a 7-5 6-4 triumph.

Federer broke Gasquet at 5-5 to gain the advantage and went on to take the first set.

Gutsy Del Potro recovered from a set down to win 3-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 against rising star Zverev and will play Serbia's Viktor Troicki, after he beat John Isner in the final match of the day.
