Hurricane Ophelia becomes 10th Atlantic hurricane of 2017 season

Tropical Storm Ophelia to Become Record-Tying 10th Straight Atlantic Hurricane Soon, Then an Intense Post-Tropical

Center officials said the hurricane is forecast to drift northeastward over the next 24 hours.

"And if separated, there would be a tropical storm tossed in the mix of all the hurricanes", Moses tweeted on Tuesday. Some further strengthening is possible over the next two days.

Ophelia became a hurricane on Wednesday, becoming the 10th hurricane in the Atlantic in 2017. This means it will be much closer to Europe by this weekend than the U.S. There will likely be impacts for Ireland by early next week.

Ophelia is centered about 725 miles (1,165 kilometers) southwest of the Azores and is moving northeast near 3 mph (6 kph).

There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Tropical Storm Ophelia to Become Record-Tying 10th Straight Atlantic Hurricane Soon, Then an Intense Post-Tropical

Should Ophelia become a hurricane later on Wednesday, as expected, it would be the 10th straight North Atlantic tropical cyclone to reach hurricane strength, something that hasn't happened since at least 1893 (though lack of satellite measurements until the latter half of the twentieth century means there's some uncertainty here). He says a combination of slightly warmer than normal water and weak upper level winds helped make that hurricane streak.

Even as an ex-hurricane, both the American and European models suggest parts of Ireland, especially near the west coast, could be blasted by hurricane-like conditions on Monday. That's a bit of an unusual track for Atlantic storms. However, if it does strike the Irish coast, it will not do so as a hurricane, but a tropical storm.

Perhaps the most impressive statistic is that if Ophelia strengthens to a hurricane, which it is forecast to do, it will be the tenth consecutive hurricane.

More information about the hurricane can be found online.

Well off in the Atlantic Ocean, Ophelia poses no threat to the United States.
