Delhi bans Diwali firecrackers

Supreme Court order on firecracker ban expected Monday

The top court's order also does not specify what happens to all those who bring in firecrackers into Delhi-NCR from neighbouring states such as Uttar Pradesh or Haryana where sale of firecrackers is legal. The Supreme Court had on Monday said that its order of last November banning the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-National Capital Region would continue till October 31, in an effort to check pollution during the festival of lights. However, there is no clarity on selling of firecrackers online.

On Monday, the Supreme Court had ordered a blanket ban on the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR, with an eye on the air pollution levels in the national capital, especially immediately after Diwali festival.

A bench headed by Justice A.K. Sikri, while restoring the order, said: "We should see at least in one Diwali the impact of a cracker-free festivity".

Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who ruled the city-state for nearly 15 years, on Tuesday said that the firecracker ban on Diwali will disappoint people as it is a "sentimental religious celebration".

"I guess those people will end up bursting them, so it's not a 100 per cent victory", Padmanabhan said. But the November order was briefly lifted last month, allowing residents to buy firecrackers ahead of Diwali, which falls on October 19 this year.

"The court has made it clear that all licences stand banned forthwith", Haripriya Padmanabhan, one of the petitioners, said after the order. The license of firecrackers manufacturers have also been suspended till November 1 in wake of the pollution caused in the city due to bursting of firecrackers in the region.

After getting trolled on Twitter for a grammatical mistake, popular fiction writer Chetan Bhagat is again being panned for his latest comments on the Indian Supreme Court's decision to ban fire-crackers and given a rather communal slant to the matter. The petition had stated: "Our lungs have not yet fully developed and we can not take further pollution through the bursting of crackers".
