Pay Rs 3000 crore to avoid metro fare hike: Centre to Kejriwal

Delhi Metro fare hike: Kejriwal asks chief secretary to call DMRC board's emergency meeting

Earlier, the Delhi government had urged DMRC chief, Mangu Singh, to put on hold the October fare hike plans till the government assessed as to how the hikes on fare were being decided.

According to the Newspaper, . "However, till that happens, let the spirit of partnership prevail and I do hope that you will and a mutually acceptable solution to the present impasse relating to the second fare hike which we clearly regard as anti-people", the letter said.

The Delhi State Government has been asking DMRC to hold the second phase of fare hike - which will come into effect from October 10 while the Central Government is stating that fare hike can not be kept on hold.

"Neither the central government nor the state government, or even the board of the company, has legal power to change the recommendations made by the FFC", Puri's letter read.

The new DMRC fares will be effective from October 10.

Goel, in his response, said the BJP was merely trying to divert attention from the issue of metro fare hike.

He added that since the Centre bears 100% loss for the Kolkata Metro, he saw no difficulty if it bears 50% in the case of Delhi Metro.

Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who had expressed his opposition to the proposed hike in two missives to Union housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri, openly disapproved of the board's decision.

The Minister said that advising the nominees of the central and state governments on the Board of DMRC to postpone the hike for a few months - which Kejriwal called a "simpler course" - was "not in conformity" with the Act.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday wrote to Union Minister of State (independent charge) Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri saying the Delhi government was willing to pay half the amount of loss caused by putting off the metro fare hike if the Centre agreed to pay the other half. For all other distance zones, fares will be increased by Rs 10, with the maximum fare for journeys longer than 32kms going up from Rs 50 to Rs 60.

The AAP has also warned of protests if the DMRC remains adamant at increasing the fares. If the fare is revised again, it is expected to go up by a maximum of Rs. 10 w.e.f. October 10.
