October Harvest Moon Rare Sight to See

Spectacular Harvest Moon appears in October sky for first time since 2009

More scientifically, the harvest moon is defined as the full moon closest to the September equinox - this year the equinox occurred on September 22.

In addition to appearing an orangish hue as it first rises, the harvest moon tends to bring a succession of brighter nights, as fuller moons rise nearly immediately after the sun sets in the Northern Hemisphere. Usually it occurs before the equinox in September but, in 2017, the Harvest Moon will actually be in October.

The harvest moon is so called because for centuries, farmers waited for it so they could gather in crops to prepare for winter, using its bright light to extend the working day.

Last year's harvest moon was a supermoon, as the moon was especially close to Earth.

But if you missed it Thursday, never fear: The moon will be nearly full through the weekend, unless cloud cover gets in the way, according to USA Today. Eastern Time, but won't cross our skies until 7:21 p.m. This year's harvest moon marks the first time since 2009 the harvest moon has arced across an October sky. The time before this was in 2006.

This year, the Harvest Moon will take place tonight - on October 5.
