Facebook says Russian firm bought 3000 ads during 2016 campaign

After some prodding, the company this week gave Congress the ads that it says Russia-based groups appear to have bought to influence last year's USA presidential campaign.

Twitter has said it found postings linked to those same accounts, and the House and Senate intelligence panels have asked both companies, along with Google, to testify publicly in the coming weeks.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced September 21 that the company would provide the ads to Congress and also make changes to ensure the political ads on its platform are more transparent.

In a statement on Monday, Facebook fb said it would add more than 1,000 people over the next year and invest more in software to flag and take down ads automatically. However, the ads also need to be interesting enough to inspire users to click on them before sharing. What's more, they have not reportedly been banned from advertising on the platform. In many cases, the ads encouraged people to follow pages on those issues. "We understand more about how our service was abused and we will continue to investigate to learn all we can". According to Facebook, the ads touched on divisive affairs such as LGBT and race issues as well as immigration and gun rights. "Facebook's Community Standards strictly prohibit attacking people based on their protected characteristics, and our advertising terms are even more restrictive, prohibiting advertisers from discriminating against people based on religion and other attributes". If these ads or content were placed or posted authentically, you would allow many of these.

The social media giant says an estimated 10 million people in the US saw at least one of the 3,000 ads that were bought by accounts linked to the Russian government.

Why couldn't they be stopped?

Fewer than half of the ads - which ran between 2015 and 2017 - were seen before the election, with 56 percent of them seen after the election.

Facebook Inc intends to employ 1,000 more individuals to survey advertisements and guarantee they meet its terms, as a component of a push to stop Russian Federation and different nations from utilizing the web-based social networking system to meddle in others' races, it said on Monday.

Why didn't the rubles tip Facebook off?

Individuals absorbed in this web of keeping a tab on and deception did not propose any manifestation that they had been singled out or the ads emanated from the Russians. However, he further stated that advertisers paying in Russian currency or people accessing Facebook from Russia are not doing anything wrong.

Nor does Facebook stop foreign organizations from buying ads in countries outside their homes. "So, we're just looking at the tip of the iceberg".
