Aleksei Navalny, Putin Critic, Is Sentenced to 20 Days in Jail

Supporters of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin rally at Manezh square outside Kremlin in Moscow Russia Sunday

Over the past year, Mr. Navalny turned into the pre-eminent critic of Russia's president, Vladimir V. Putin, exposing endemic corruption among top-level government officials in a series of popular videos.

Notably, the 20-day jail sentence is long enough to force Navalny to miss a major rally he scheduled for Saturday.

The 2018 World Cup will be held at 12 venues in 11 Russian cities - Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Sochi, Kazan, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg and Samara.

The Kremlin warned Navalny's supporters to refrain from holding any unsanctioned rallies in his absence.

The US Senate last week confirmed businessman, veteran diplomat and former presidential candidate Jon Huntsman as ambassador to Russian Federation, filling a crucial post at a time when ties are at dangerously low ebb.

A close associate, Leonid Volkov, was also jailed for 20 days and threatened to go on hunger strike. "Old man Putin got so scared of our rallies in the regions and chose to make himself a little present for himself for his birthday", Navalny said in a tweet after receiving his sentence.

The court sentenced Navalny on Monday for repeatedly violating a law on public meetings and demonstrations.

In another Moscow courthouse, a judge is expected to hand down a ruling later Monday in the case of Navalny's campaign chief, Leonid Volkov, who faces similar charges.

Navalny, 41, said in court that he is being persecuted for political reasons. It was widely seen as a politically ordered judgment.
