Assam: Ex-army man Haque asked to prove citizenship

Armyman For 30 Years Now Accused Of Being Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrant

A notice from Foreign's Tribunal has placed him in the doubtful-voter category and also charged him with having entered India in 1971 without proper documents.

For 30 years he served the Indian Army.

The notice asked him to present his case before September 11 but the notice landed at his address late.

The reports came to light after the foreigner's tribunal in Assam's Kamrup district has summoned Mohammad Azmal Haque, who was appointed as the Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the Indian Army by former President APJ Abdul Kalam, to appear before the court on October 13 next with documents to prove that he is an Indian citizen. He has been declared a "doubtful voter" by a Foreigners Tribunal which has summoned him to furnish proof of his nationality.

According to India Today, Ajmal Haque's wife Mumtaz Begum had to go through the same process in 2012 when Azmal Haque was still a mechanical engineer with the Indian Army serving at Chandigarh. Foreigner's Tribunal of the state has now asked him to prove his nationality and has claimed that the person is an illegal immigrant.

Haque had retired as a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) after serving the Army for 30 years.

The Assam Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay told the media, "I will look into the matter and see why a notice has been served". An emotional Haque on Sunday had asked, "Why do I have to be humiliated so many times? Its a 2008 case and on Tuesday (October 3) when the court reopens, we will send for the documents".

The issue was brought to the attention of the Army yesterday through a Twitter post by lawyer Aman Wadud where he said, "Mohd".

Earlier in 2012 Haque was accused of being an illegal immigrant in 2012 by Foreigns' Tribunal.

Bangladeshi immigration is a sensitive issue in this northern state.

Replying to Waduds tweet, Major D P Singh notified the Eastern Command, which said "necessary assistance will be provided to the veteran". It attempts to create a data base of people who had lived in Assam before the cut-off date in 2010 was mired by chaos, police firing and it had to be stopped. He added that his mother's name was also mentioned in the 1951 National Register of Citizens, Hindustan Times reported.
