Twitter briefs United States congressional investigators probing alleged Russian Federation role in election

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg rejected US President Donald Trump's assertion the social network was against him

Twitter told congressional investigators Thursday that it pulled down 201 accounts linked to Russian entities that purchased ads on Facebook.

Facebook has been under the spotlight for its role in Russia's USA election interference for a long time, so the social network might be relieved to find it's now Twitter's turn to come under scrutiny.

Earlier in the day, the social media company met with the Senate and House intelligence committees, amid the ongoing congressional investigations into Russia's efforts to interfere with the 2016 presidential campaign, including through social media.

Executives from Facebook, Google, and Twitter will appear before the US Congress in the coming weeks as lawmakers probe Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 US election, committee sources said on Wednesday.

Twitter also says that it found about 200 accounts linked to Facebook accounts that Facebook had identified as being connected to Russian efforts to influence users. RT paid to promote 1,823 tweets that potentially were directed toward the USA market of users, Twitter said. The accounts had already been or were immediately suspended after being identified, Twitter said.

Twitter today "proactively" shared with Congress a "round-up of ads" that Russia's state-run TV network Russia Today (RT) targeted to US users in 2016.

Twitter officials on Thursday briefed US congressional investigators probing how Russian-backed internet trolls, bots and targeted ads may have been used on the microblogging site to influence last year's election. Although there is nothing yet official about it, many experts believe that many of these Twitter and Facebook activities by Russia-linked accounts helped Donald Trump win the election.

"These campaigns were directed at followers of mainstream media and primarily promoted RT Tweets regarding news stories", Twitter's blog post reads.

"Content that violates our rules with respect to automated accounts and spam can have a highly negative effect on user experience, and we have long taken substantial action to stem that flow", it added. Twitter made presentations to Senate Intelligence Committee and House Intelligence Committee staffers on Thursday, and Sen.

Meanwhile, Google said that it was not involved in the alleged Russian campaign to influence the United States elections, but as per Buzzfeed, Google's automated ad-targeting system may have had a role in affecting the views of the public.
